An injured walker was airlifted to hospital after falling in the Lake District.

The man, from Staffordshire, fell while descending from Swirl How yesterday afternoon.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 2.30pm and a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from HMS Gannet in Ayrshire flew to the scene.

The man was coming down Prison Band with two family members when he injured his knee and was unable to continue walking.

A Coniston MRT spokesperson said: “The man was treated by a paramedic from a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter and stretchered by the team back up to near the summit of Swirl How from where he was airlifted to Cumbria Infirmary, Carlisle for further treatment.”

The rescue involved 12 volunteer members of the Coniston team.
