An injured walker on the Pennine Way was discovered by fellow hikers after sitting on the fell for two hours.

The walker suffered an ankle injury late this morning on a section of the national trail above Muker in Swaledale, where there is no mobile phone signal.

A passing group came across the injured person and went for help. Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team was called out to the walker, described by the team as well equipped.

A team spokesperson said: “The team treated the casualty and with the help of the ambulance crew evacuated on stretcher to Muker. A power cut in Swaledale made the normal ‘difficult’ mobile phone communications even more so.

The local pub, the Farmers Arms, put its phone at the team’s disposal. The team spokesperson also added its thanks to the group of walkers who raised the alarm and added: “Today’s incident is a timely reminder to make sure you are prepared for all weather conditions when out in the Dales.

“The weather today went from warm and sunny to gale force winds and rain within the hour.

“Darkness now comes early and fast so it’s essential that everyone in your group carries a good torch whatever time you plan to actually finish your walk.

“Also make sure someone knows where you intend to go and when you are expected back.

“Finally and perhaps most importantly please get out there and enjoy yourselves.”
