A walker was rescued after she injured her leg in a fall on the Coniston Fells.

The woman, in her 70s, attempted to reach safety after the incident yesterday, but her husband had to go for help as dark fell.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 9.15pm to the walker, who had been on a route on Dow Crag with her husband.

A team spokesperson said she stumbled while on the fell: “However she bravely continued until she could no longer make any progress,” the spokesperson said.

“By now it was dark. Her husband then set off to get help after making his wife as comfortable as possible, making an emergency call from a public call box in Coniston. He himself also became injured on the descent.”

Team members found the injured woman on the Walna Scar track. They treated her injuries then stretchered her to their Land Rover which then took her to the Coniston MRT base.

The spokesperson said: “While this operation was underway, team members treated the man, who was in his 80s, for leg injuries.

The rescue involved 13 volunteer members of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team.
