The nine-hour rescue took place in the dark high on Crinkle Crags

Two walkers rescued after getting stuck on steep ground in the dark returned to find their car had been broken into and their possessions stolen.

The pair were in a group of five who got into difficulties on Crinkle Crags, sparking a nine-hour operation to bring them to safety.

The Aeronautical Rescue Command Centre in Kinloss alerted the team leader of Langdale Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team about 7.10pm yesterday to say an emergency beacon had been activated in the area of Crinkle Crags, overlooking Great Langdale.

About the same time, police informed the team they had taken a 999 call from five people cragfast and benighted on Crinkle Crags.

A team spokesperson said: “A bit of investigation and it was confirmed that they related to the same incident and identified a small area to investigate high on Crinkle Crags.

“The group was located by search dog Ted, assisted from the steep ground and escorted from the hill.

“The bad day continued for two of the group, because when we returned them to their car, it had been broken in to and all their luggage stolen.”

Eleven volunteers from the rescue team took part in the incident.
