Customers and staff at Britain’s highest pub have boosted rescuers funds with a donation of more than £500.

Members of the Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team were treated to a meal at the Tan Hill Inn at which £525 was handed over to the team.

The volunteer rescuers had just completed a training exercise on the fells around the pub, which stands in an isolated position on the Pennine Way, 528m (1,732ft) above sea level.

The donation represents cash collected at the pub by customers and staff. The inn’s manager Roger Staniland handed over a cheque to team leader Adrian Cottrell last Friday.

Mr Cottrell said: “I know the staff at Tan Hill are enthusiastic about encouraging customers to make a donation to their chosen charities and we really appreciate those efforts.

“This sort of sum is a significant contribution to the funds we need each year for training and equipment. We are very grateful for the support.”
