A group of Peak District walkers was praised by rescuers for its skills in guiding them accurately to its position after one of them suffered an ankle injury.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 9.40pm yesterday when a young walker with the group slipped while coming down from Kinder Scout.

An Edale team spokesperson said: “The group they were with was able to give a precise grid reference, making locating and evacuating the casualty quick and easy.

“Local team members were soon on scene, and treated the walker with analgesia and splinting, before carrying on a mountain rescue stretcher back to a waiting ambulance.”

The spokesperson said it was a good example where being able to give a six-figure grid reference from an Ordnance Survey map made a real difference in an emergency situation.

“Well done to the party for having these skills before venturing onto the hills,” the spokesperson added.
