The man came off his bike on a route above Ullswater

A mountain biker was airlifted to hospital after injuring his head and back when he fell from his machine in the Lake District.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 11.50am today and called on the neighbouring Penrith team for help.

The Great North Air Ambulance also flew to the site near Auterstone Wood above Ullswater, where the 18-year-old had gone over his handlebars on the bridleway near Swarthbeck.

He was treated at the scene and then stretchered 700m to where the helicopter had landed.

The aircraft crew flew the man to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle for further treatment.
