A parking meter and a tent filled with rubbish were among almost half a ton of litter cleared from a national park by outdoor fans at the weekend.

Fifty bags of litter and other detritus were collected by participants in the event in Snowdonia on Sunday.

As a reward for their litter-picking efforts, participants in the first Envirotrek meeting of the year were able to enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including climbing, kayaking, paddleboarding and high- and low-ropes courses.

The event, organised by Respect the Mountains and sponsored by outdoor brands Keen and Bergans, as well as Barefoot Wines, took place in and around Llanberis, and was the first in the Europe-wide series.

Seven different groups made their way from the starting point at The Heights and together collected 450kg of rubbish.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “All sort of things were found. A lot of cans and plastic bottles, even a car-park parking meter, car lights, half a corrugated roof, a car tyre and a complete tent filled with rubbish were found.”

The most enthusiastic litter picker won a pair of Keen walking shoes and other prizes went to collectors of the most original items of rubbish.

Participants also took part in a barbecue lunch at the event.

Local partners included Padarn Adventures, the Chartered Institute of Waste Management, Cyngor Gwynedd Council, Wise Network, RAW Adventures, Heart of Adventure ‘Calon Antur’, Outdoor Wales and The Heights.
