Rescuers in the Yorkshire Dales are on the lookout for walkers who are up for a challenge.

Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association’s Wharfedale Three Peaks event covers an alternative to the traditional challenge that takes place a few miles away.

The event, the team’s major fundraiser of the year, takes in Birks Fell, Buckden Pike and Great Whernside in a 35km (22-mile) circular route starting in Kettlewell.

For those not up to the Three Peaks challenge, there is a shorter route over two of the fells, and a valley walk which is also open to families.

Entries close in a week’s time, and the team already has 294 participants signed up for the event. All proceeds go towards the running costs of the Grassington-based team, which carries out rescues on the hills and in the caves of the eastern Yorkshire Dales.

A team spokesperson said: “The Three and Two Peak routes are open to walkers and runners and offer spectacular views over Upper Wharfedale and surrounding Yorkshire Dales towards the well known Yorkshire Three Peaks in Ribblesdale.

“The 4½-mile valley walk suitable for families and those wanting an easier day follows the Dales Way path up the River Wharfe to the village of Starbotton and returns to Kettlewell at a slightly higher elevation – Paradise walk – offering views over the Upper Wharfedale valley.

“The UWFRA team will be hosting the event. When deciding on a route, consider that you have the required physical strength and stamina for the event that you apply for.”

The two longer routes cost £15 per person to enter, and the valley walk £12 with a special family rate for up to four of £20 for the low-level route.

The Wharfedale Three Peaks Challenge takes place on Saturday 27 June and closing date for applications for the event is Wednesday 24 June.

Details are on the event’s website.
