A mountain rescue team is on the lookout for new members.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team will hold a recruitment evening next Wednesday for potential volunteers to join its roster of trainees.

The team responds to about 40 callouts each year, year ranging from injured walkers and climbers to missing and vulnerable people in and around the North York Moors and beyond.

Graeme White of Cleveland MRT said: “We are holding a recruitment evening on Wednesday 22 July at our base near Great Ayton, North Yorkshire.

“Applications are sought from outdoor enthusiasts both men and woman aged from 18 upwards with a good level of physical ability, who are able to navigate using a map and compass and who are able to work as part of a team but also rely on their own initiative when needed.

“You do not need any previous mountain rescue experience as all the core skills will be taught to you over a probationary period. You will be constantly assessed with a final skill test at the end. The core skills include mountain rescue casualty care, driving of team vehicles, search skills, crag rescue and water rescue to mention a few.

“We ask that you have basic outdoor experience and a willingness to learn from an experienced team of people, that you will be able to attend a reasonable amount of callouts, many of which may be during normal working hours, and are able to give up your Wednesday evenings to attend team training and help with running the team, and one weekend every quarter to attend weekend training.”

The closing date for applications for the team is Monday 20 July. Anyone interested should email the team for application details. mailto:chair@clevelandmrt.org.uk.
