A unique new footwear model has won a top award at this week’s major outdoors trade show.

Keen’s Uneek 8mm Cord Sandal impressed judges at the OutDoor show in Friedrichshafen, where it gained a gold award.

The Portland, Oregon-based hybrid manufacturer said it was particularly delighted to be the only footwear brand to be honoured with the globally recognised distinction.

With more than three years of research and development, Keen said its Uneek is a sandal unlike anything else.

Launched in spring-summer 2015, the new take on the outdoor sandal has already enjoyed global success, with new styles in a wide variety of colours and patterns launching for next year, including the award winning 8mm flat cord edition. The panel of international judges said: “With its unique look, super comfortable fit and new material, Keen has further improved this great product. A superb solution for travelling, outdoor activities and everyday use.”

Innovation programme leader Rory Fuerst Jr said: “Creating a shoe as unconventional as Uneek represents our irreverent way of thinking when it comes to design and comfort, while keeping true to the hybrid versatility in our DNA.

“We wanted to create a truly new fit experience and are delighted that the hard work of all of the production, design and development team has been recognised by such an important accolade as the gold award.”

The sandal substitutes traditional machinery and conventional materials for a simple two-cord construction.

Users can enjoy custom and secure fit thanks to its free-moving cord structure and a lightweight PU midsole for long-lasting support. An anatomical microfibre footbed, a secure-fit lace capture system and a soft microfibre heel back guarantee all day comfort.

Spring-summer 2016 Uneeks will feature a new environment-friendly bio technology: Cleansport NXT natural odour control. Users can expect to enjoy the benefits of open air footwear: lightweight, flexibility, extreme breathability and the ultimate in comfort.
