The woman fell into Mousthwaite Comb, centre, on Blencathra

A walker was seriously injured in a fall from a Lake District fell.

The 70-year-old, from Germany, was seen to fall by another walker who phoned police to say they had seen a woman fall 500m from a path on Scales Fell on Blencathra.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 1.50pm today.

A team spokesperson said: “Getting details as to the exact location took some minutes, as the team could not re-contact the informant.

“The team sent one vehicle immediately to scout the area, and the members of that group soon saw that the accident was in fact in the top corner of Mousthwaite Combe, where a 70-year-old German tourist had taken a 300ft [90m] tumbling fall down through the steep bracken, to land in a gully.

“She had suffered serious shoulder injuries. Further team members arrived to assist. She was immobilised in a vacuum mattress, and then stretchered down through chest-high bracken to rendezvous with the [Great North Air Ambulance Service] air ambulance.”

The 2½-hour rescue involved 11 volunteer Keswick MRT members.
