Missing walker Goffredo Bondanelli

Extensive searches continued over the weekend for a walker who has been missing in Lochaber for almost three weeks.

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team was joined by colleagues from RAF teams and Coastguard staff in the hunt for Goffredo Bondanelli.

Police officers and search dogs also took part in the operation, focused on high- and low-level areas between the villages of Lochailort and Glenfinnan and specific areas between Loch Ailort and Loch Eilt, where it is believed Mr Bondanelli planned to camp.

The 56-year-old German man has not been seen since 3 May.

Police Scotland said: “Unfortunately Mr Bondanelli is still missing and officer would urge walkers in the area to remain vigilant and to report anything that may assist the search.”

The experienced hillwalker was last seen in Fort William on boarding a train to Lochailort, before undertaking a five-day 76km (47-mile) walk between Lochailort and Glenfinnan, with plans to return to Glenfinnan on 8 May.

Mr Bondanelli would have been wild camping on the hills during this five-day period at sites including Coire na Cnamha, Lochan Fèith Easain and Sgùrr an Utha.

He may also have been walking on the nearby A830 at times. Mr Bondanelli is said to be well equipped. He has a green tent and dark rucksack.

Mr Bondanelli is described as about 5ft 8ins (1.73m) tall, of an athletic build with dark and grey hair, and a greying beard. He is believed to be wearing dark outdoor clothing.

Mr Bondanelli was possibly due to return by train on 8 May from Glenfinnan to Fort William or Arrochar, Argyll, but he may have used a bus service. Police said enquiries are currently being carried out in Argyll to establish if Mr Bondanelli has been in the area.

Police urged anyone walking or taking part in outdoor pursuits in the Lochaber and Argyll areas to contact if they have seen or have had contact with a man matching Mr Bondanelli’s description, or if they have any information to assist the search.

Anyone with information should ring 101.
