A teenager was rescued after falling ill while camping on the Lake District fells.

The girl, who has sickle cell anaemia, was camping in Keppel Cove on the slopes of Helvellyn on Thursday evening when she began suffering pain caused by the condition.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 10.30pm and went to the camper’s aid.

She was treated at the scene then stretchered to one of the team’s Land Rovers, which took her to the rescuers’ base where an ambulance took her to hospital in Carlisle for further treatment.

The two-hour rescue involved 14 volunteer Patterdale MRT members.
