More than 100 mountain rescuers put their skills into practice dealing with a large-scale incident in the Cairngorms.

The simulated rescue was the culmination of Scottish Mountain Rescue’s annual training conference at the weekend.

The event, at Glenmore Lodge national outdoor training centre near Aviemore, attracted team members from across Scotland.

The weekend began with mountaineer Sandy Allan speaking to a packed lecture theatre about his ascent of Nanga Parbat’s Mazeno Ridge.

Saturday’s activities involved different workshops on subjects including avalanche rescue, personal protection equipment, 4×4 off-road driving, search management, casualty care, rigging and social media.

A Coastguard Sikorsky S-92 search and rescue helicopter and its Bristow crew also flew to the venue and landed at Glenmore Lodge.

On Sunday, members took part in a training exercise based on a real rescue scenario, putting into practice what they had learnt on Saturday.

Members co-ordinated and planned the rescue of a large number of casualties in the Cairngorms. Their skills and knowledge were put to the test to successfully complete the training exercise.

Scottish Mountain Rescue represents 23 of the 27 volunteer civilian teams in Scotland. Its work includes national fundraising, organisation and delivery of national training courses and events, provision of insurance and supply of equipment, liaising with Police Scotland and the Scottish Government and international rescue organisations and co-ordinating good practice.

Mountain Rescue in Scotland is carried out by about 1,000 skilled volunteers organised in local rescue teams covering the whole of the country. There are also three police and one RAF team.

The weekend event was supported by UKSAR Volunteer Training Fund, Glenmore Lodge, Bristow Helicopters, Keela, Mountain Equipment, Backcountry Access, Blizzard Survival and Bridge Systems.
