Rescuers searching on the Isle of Arran for missing walker Valerij Tomarenko have found a body.

Arran Mountain Rescue Team made the discovery about 6am on Wednesday on Goatfell, the island’s highest mountain.

A team spokesperson said: “Seven team members plus one of the team’s mountain rescue dogs started searching around Goatfell and after an hour or so sadly a body was located by team members in the water shoot area, an area of some very steep ground to the west side of the summit.

“Although a formal identification has still to be made, our thoughts go out to the family and friends of Valerij at this difficult time.”

Mr Tomarenko, a translator from Hamburg in Germany, was holidaying in the area. He had last been in touch with his family on 14 August and was captured on CCTV the following day. His car was found at the ferry terminal at Ardrossan on the mainland, prompting a search on the island.
