A walker managed to make his way off a Lake District fell after injuring his head in a fall.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted by police at 3.20pm on Monday after the elderly man hurt himself near Threshthwaite Cove above Hartsop.

A team spokesperson said: “The team mobilised a Land Rover to locate the male and his friend who were believed to be slowly walking towards the road.

“On arrival at the car park at Hartsop the team met the male who’d had made good progress on foot.

“The casualty was conveyed to Patterdale base where he was assessed by a team doctor as he had sustained bruising and grazing to his head. He was advised to attend hospital for a check-up and possible scan due to the nature of his fall.”

The incident lasted almost two hours and involved 14 Patterdale MRT members.

Two days previously the team was called out when a walker injured his leg while practising night-navigation on the fells.

The 56-year-old slipped while descending the ridge above Caudale Bridge, near Sykeside.

The spokesperson said: “He was a member of a party of five well equipped and experienced walkers who had been practising night-navigation skills on Caudale Moor.”

Patterdale MRT was alerted at 7.35pm and 10 team members responded to the callout and ascended to the man’s location high on the ridge, just below the disused quarry.

The walker was assessed by a team doctor who diagnosed a possible ruptured tendon. “His leg was splinted, he was given painkillers and packaged in a stretcher before being sledged and carried down to the road,” the spokesperson said. “Other members of the casualty’s party retrieved their car from Hartsop, and the man was assisted into the vehicle for transport to Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle.”

The three-hour rescue involved 10 Patterdale MRT volunteers.
