Review avalanche service, says MSP

The operation of Scotland’s avalanche forecast service should be reviewed, according to an MSP.Testing the snowpack for avalanche riskMike Rumbles, who represents West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine in the Scottish Parliament, said he had been contacted by several constituents, concerned that the service had ended despite there being large deposits of snow on the Highland mountains, and further snowfalls.Mr Mumbles has written to sports minister Stewart Maxwell, asking for the Scottish Avalanche Information Service to be extended.

Heavy snow hits Snowdon cafe work

Traffic banned from Dales Roman road

Traffic is to be banned from a Roman road and seven other routes in the Yorkshire Dales.The national park authority has imposed full-time regulation orders on eight green lanes, which means recreational 4x4s and motorbikes will be barred from using the tracks.

Lennox beats world's best for Three Peaks crown

Reigning king of the Three Peaks Rob Jebb lost his crown today to first-timer Jethro Lennox who beat a world-class field to win the 24-mile race across some of the Yorkshire Dales’ toughest terrain.Jethro Lennox wins the Three Peaks Race 2008The Shettleston Harrier, who had never competed in the race before, beat a field of 754 runners to take the title and a cheque for £1,000, along with the status of world long-distance mountain running champion.

Man injured in Tryfan fall

A climber is in hospital after a six-hour rescue operation in Snowdonia.Tryfan, in the Ogwen Valley The 17-year-old, from Worcestershire, was stretchered off Tryfan by members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue team, who took him to a waiting helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey.

Concerns as avalanche forecasts end

Scotland walkers asked to help ptarmigan survey

Walkers on three Scottish mountains are being asked to keep an eye out for ptarmigan.The bird, which changes plumage to white during winter, is rare in that it is one of the few in the British Isles which chooses the high mountains as its home.
