Woman dies after Torridon fall

A mountaineer died today after a fall in Torridon.The unnamed woman was airlifted by Coastguard helicopter from Fuar Tholl, a 907m (2,976ft) corbett near Achnashellach in Glen Carron.Members of Torridon Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) went to the aid of the woman this afternoon.

Outdoors Show opens this Friday

The annual Gore-tex fest that is the Outdoors Show opens this Friday.The celebration of everything climby, walky, paddly and generally open airy takes place in that hub of the outdoors world, Birmingham.You can be sure there will be lots of expensive clothing in this year’s garish colours to ogle at, GPS toys to play with, and ‘celebrities’ to listen to.Organisations as diverse as the Scouts, the Ramblers’ Association, the Royal Marines Commandos and Jenning’s Brewery will be tempting visitors.

Cash boost for Scottish mountain safety

Scottish mountaineering today received a financial boost to help improve safety on the mountains.In a sad and ironic twist, Scottish sports minister Stewart Maxwell announced the investment in mountain safety just 6km (3¾ miles) from where David Rainey lost his life in a 270m (900ft) fall on Saturday.

Hike will mark start of ultra running season

The first race of the ultra-running challenge hoofs it into the hills next weekend.The Wuthering Hike, a 32 miler (51km) runs from the Bronte village of Haworth in West Yorkshire, over the supposed site of Wuthering Heights – hence its name – and heads into Lancashire and Calderdale before returning over the Pennine moors to its start point.

The police chief found dead on Snowdon on Tuesday probably had double the legal drink-driving amount of alcohol in his body, a consultant pathologist said.Chief Constable Michael ToddDr Anthony Caslin told an inquest today that Chief Constable Michael Todd’s blood-alcohol level was 105 mg per 100ml at the time of his death.

Historic footpath mapping project loses its way

A major project to discover forgotten footpaths has lost its way, according to a report about to be published.Discovering Lost Ways, set up to map disused rights of way in the wake of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, (CRoW Act) has failed to reopen a single bridleway or footpath.The Discovering Lost Ways project has become mired Now, Natural England is recommending the scheme be radically changed, according to a report to be published in The Times today, because it has become bogged down in long-winded processes and red tape.Two pilot schemes were run in Cheshire and Shropshire, the intention being to map any routes which had inadvertently been omitted from official maps.

Met Office improves Welsh hill forecasts

Walkers on the Welsh hills and mountains are being offered a better weather service.Enhanced weather forecasts are now available online for Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, with extra information to aid safety in the uplands.
