Walkers in Sussex are celebrating after an inspector turned down demands to divert public paths at a stately home.The Hon Charles Pearson, owner of the Pitshill House, and half brother of Lord Cowdray, had wanted to move a public bridleway away from the dilapidated Georgian mansion.

Kendal hosts mountain festivals this weekend

The Big Daddy of English mountain culture gets underway this weekend.The Kendal Mountain Festivals are now established as the premier venue for film and literature with a mountaineering bent and this year’s big names are Joe Simpson, who will be in the Cumbrian town for the big-screen premiere of The Beckoning Silence, and Geoff Powter, a Canadian psychologist whose book We Cannot Fail: The Fine Line Between Adventure and Madness, provides the literary theme for the festival.The film festival rolls into Kendal on Friday night, 9 November, with Asif Kapadia’s Far North, starring Sean Bean and Michelle Yeoh, shot in the Arctic and, apparently, the tale of how a soldier's unexpected arrival affects two women's simple existence.

A naked rambler has been cleared of causing alarm following a cliff-top walk.Police in Dorset mounted a major operation to keep a close watch on 20 naturist walkers who took part in a charity event in June.

Royal estate harrier shootings: no charges

Police said today that no charges will be brought over the alleged killing of two rare birds of prey on one of the Queen’s estates.A warden and two other walkers said they saw two hen harriers killed while in flight on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk where Prince Harry and two others were shooting.

No poppies on Gable, pleads fell club

Organisers of the annual Remembrance Day service on Great Gable’s summit have asked that poppies are not placed on the fell.The memorial plaque at Great Gable's summit, with a poppy wreathThe Fell and Rock Climbing Club (FRCC), which has held the event since the First World War, says discarded poppies left littering the summit plateau are damaging the environment.

Tryfan death-fall man used 'misleading' guide book

Mountain rescuers have criticised a guide book used by a walker who fell to his death on a Snowdonia peak.The inquest into the death of 32-year-old Christopher Parratt heard that the book was misleading and contained a map that was virtually impossible to use.
