Walker dies after being blown off Helvellyn

A man died after falling from Helvellyn yesterday.Michael Hollinshead, 62, of Egerton, Bolton, Greater Manchester, was blown into Brown Cove, beneath Swirral Edge.  Mr Hollinshead fell 300m (985 ft) and sustained multiple injuries.Brown Cove, with Helvellyn's summit centre and Catstycam to the left Reports indicate he may have been having trouble with his crampons and was trying to adjust them when the accident happened.

Helvellyn still at risk of avalanche

Fell-top conditions on Helvellyn remain difficult as a gradual thaw sets in at lower levels.Today’s news from the Lake District authority’s assessor is that a clear fracture line has developed along the cornice on the eastern aspect of the summit plateau.Helvellyn's summit in winter The report warns that the crack should be avoided.

Avalanche service now live for Scots mountains

Scotland’s avalanche forecast service starts today, but the prospects for the weekend are not great.Climbers in LochaberWhile avalanche risk is low, at category one, in both Lochaber and the northern Cairngorms, the two areas covered by the reports, there’s little in the way of challenging ice conditions.In Lochaber, the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) says there is ‘enough ice for your G&T, but not much more’.

Rescuers recover two walkers' bodies

The bodies of two walkers have been found, one in the Lake District and one in Perthshire.Cumbria Constabulary confirmed yesterday evening that the body found on Skiddaw had been formally identified as Roy Sinfield, who came from the Preston, Lancashire, area.Skiddaw in more benign conditions, seen from Keswick And Tayside Police said that rescue teams had discovered the body of a woman in Kindrogan Wood, Kirkmichael, north of Blairgowrie.

Man and woman die in Dales cave drowning

Two cavers died after drowning in the Yorkshire Dales last night.The bodies of the two were found by rescuers in the Long Churn system at Selside, Ribblesdale.The entrance to Lower Long Churn Cave They were a man aged 33 from the Darlington area and a 28-year-old woman from West Yorkshire.

Scotland is gearing up for the winter season as December roars in with predicted gusts on the mountain tops of up to 80mph this weekend.Testing the snowpack in LochaberMany Munros have a covering of snow and the ski slope at Cairn Gorm is due to start running tomorrow.There are accumulations of snow above 850m and, weather permitting, the Ptarmigan tow will open on Cairn Gorm from tomorrow.

Rescued father's Ben Nevis trip was 'ridiculous'

A father’s decision to climb Ben Nevis in atrocious conditions with his two sons was branded ‘ridiculous’ by rescuers.Weather conditions prevented an RAF helicopter reaching the three, who were eventually rescued by member of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, who had been dropped by the helicopter below the cloudbase.Ben Nevis The man and his sons were walked from the mountain after being found about 5pm yesterday.

Cavers in Dales tragedy named

An inquest was opened and adjourned today into the deaths of the two cavers in the Yorkshire Dales.Cavers tackle a pitch in Lower Long Churn Cave The bodies of Caroline Jane Fletcher, 28, from Riddlesden in Keighley, West Yorkshire, and 33-year-old Stuart John Goodwill of Darlington, Co Durham, were recovered from Dam Pool in Lower Long Churn Cave, at Selside, in Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire.
