Canoeist in river tragedy named

A canoeist who died after being trapped on a weir in a Yorkshire river was named as Mark Watson.The 37-year-old hospital worker from Swillington, Leeds, was pulled from the River Calder at Luddendenfoot near Halifax, but died in Calderdale Royal Hospital.Mr Watson and three others were using inflatable canoes when they got into trouble in the turbulent water around the weir.

Everest torch will burn bright

Chinese authorities say a flame will burn on Everest’s summit to celebrate the country’s hosting of the Olympic games this summer.EverestScientists have conducted tests on the torch which will be carried to the highest point on earth, and say they are confident it will stay alight, despite the paucity of oxygen on the 8,848m (29,029ft) peak.

Secret deal agreed on Gloag access case costs

A Scottish millionaire has secured a secret agreement on costs following her successful land-access battle.Stagecoach bus magnate Ann Gloag won the right to exclude the public from parts of her Kinfauns Castle estate, despite the passing of the Land Reform (Scotland) Act which granted right-to-roam rights across the country.Right to roam in the Highlands: under threat Mrs Gloag was awarded costs against the Ramblers’ Association (RA) and Perth and Kinross Council.

School students will lead Peak moors research

Hundreds of school students will be taking to the hills next month to study the effects of climate change.Schoolchildren from 15 schools will be conducting experiments and collecting data from the uplands of the Peak District in a ground-breaking project to determine how peat moorland is affected by and affects the change in our climate.Checking wooden gully blocks that help retain moisture on Kinder Scout The students, aged 14 to 16, will measure water-table depth and water quality; the depth of the moorland peat and vegetation cover and wildlife and biomass.

SAS man will lead wheelchair attempt on Ben Nevis

A former SAS officer will lead a team of ten wheelchair users to the top of Britain’s highest mountain later this year.Action man Ken Hames is recruiting volunteers to help with the ascent, which will involve getting the disabled mountaineers to the summit of Ben Nevis.

Climber injured in Nevis fall

A climber is in hospital after a fall on Ben Nevis’s north face.The man, in his 30s and from the Leeds area, was rescued by members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, aided by an RAF helicopter.Ben Nevis's north face A Northern Constabulary spokesman said the mountaineer was found near the CIC hut after a call to the emergency services about 3.15pm yesterday.

Woman injured in Glencoe fall

A woman was airlifted to hospital yesterday after a fall in the Highlands.Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team was called to aid the mountaineer after she fell 50m down a gully in Coire Odhar, Glen Etive.The unnamed woman was with a party of 13 other climbers from the Edinburgh area when she fell.
