Patterdale rescuers aid climber and walker

A climber was taken to hospital today after falling from Yew Crag in the Lake District.Grisedale: a 17-year-old woman was stretchered to safetyThe 50-year-old man, from Peterlee in County Durham, suffered suspected head and hip injuries on the crag, on Gowbarrow overlooking Ullswater.

Wild camping: 'PM's office is wrong'

Concern is growing among outdoor professionals about what they see as a fundamental mistake in Downing Street’s rejection of the recent e-petition to allow wild camping in England.Wild camping in the Lake DistrictIn giving the thumbs-down to Darren Christie’s appeal to legalise wild camping south of the border, the Prime Minister’s office said: “On open access land wild camping is prohibited under Schedule 2 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000, which lists all restricted activities.” Yet Andy Say of Mountain Leader Training England says this is not so.The act simply details restrictions on people exercising the right of access, one of which is camping.

Festival will shine light on Ingleborough

One of Yorkshire’s noted Three Peaks comes under the spotlight next month.Ingleborough and CrummackdaleWalkers will be able to find out more about Ingleborough during six days of events organised to give an insight into the 723m fell which was once the site of a Romano-British hill fort.There are the usual walks, as well as drystone walling workshops and a chance to brush up photography and art skills.

TV presenter hits out at canoe industry after daughter's death

A TV presenter launched a fierce attack on the canoe-hire industry after an inquest into his daughter’s death.Billie ClaytonIan Clayton, who appears on ITV Yorkshire, was speaking outside a court in Welshpool where a verdict of misadventure was recorded on nine-year-old Billie Holiday Clayton, who drowned in an incident on the River Wye in April 2006.Billie’s twin brother Edward and Mr Clayton both survived when their hired canoe capsized, at Glasbury, near Hay-on-Wye, Powys.  The presenter said he had to make a choice between saving his son or daughter after the craft got into difficulties on a fast-flowing section of the river.

'Accidental death' verdict on Red Screes walker

An experienced fellwalker died after he fell 150m (490ft) from Red Screes in the Lake District.David Leo Pyle of Ambleside sustained multiple injuries in the fall, including several broken vertebrae in his neck, injuries to his head and several broken ribs, an inquest was told.

A lost dog has been found by rescuers after spending two weeks on one of England’s highest mountains.Gemma, relaxed after her ordeal on the Lakeland fellsThe animal was found today near Scafell as members of the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team were searching for three people who had gone missing on neighbouring Scafell Pike during a Three Peaks Challenge.
