Cavers safe after 30-hour ordeal in south Wales

Two cavers are safe after being trapped underground in a south Wales cave for 30 hours.The two men, in their 30s and from Gloucestershire and south Wales, were trapped by rising water but took refuge in a dry area of the Dan-yr-Ogof system in the Swansea Valley.

Historic Dales curios go on show

A national park’s outdoor curios are going on display – online.Thousands of minor noticeable features of the Yorkshire Dales national park, ranging from milk-churn stands to sheep creeps, are being logged and featured in a project run by the park authority.The Yorkshire Dales: historic features online The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority already has details of 29,000 major historical features, such as barns, old houses and lime kilns, but work has begun on cataloguing the smaller items which characterise the Dales countryside.

Britain’s largest national park is set to get even bigger.Scottish Environment Minister Mike Russell told the Scottish Parliament that the Cairngorms park would be extended to include eastern and Highland Perthshire and Blair Atholl.

Highland tent body was missing climber

The mystery body found in a tent near the West Highland Way has been identified.The remains, found by workers clearing a path in Auch Forest between Bridge of Orchy and Inveroran, have been confirmed as those of Nicholas Randall, who disappeared from his Edinburgh home almost three years ago.The West Highland Way near Bridge of Orchy Mr Randall was 31 when he disappeared on 25 April, 2005.

Campaigners lose green-lane bike battle

Campaigners have lost the battle to stop a motorbike centre using green lanes in south Devon.South Hams District Council’s development control committee granted permanent planning permission to Wheeldon Farm to run motorbike training sessions which involve the use of the lanes around the centre near Halwell.Kate Ashbrook Officers had recommended permission be given for five years, but councillors overruled them and granted permanent consent.
