MP to make plea for mountain-rescue tax break

A Cumbria MP is to meet a Treasury minister to plead for a tax exemption for mountain rescuers.A rescue Land Rover, due for a tax rise to more than £400Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale, will put the case for rescue teams’ vehicles to be exempt from road tax when he meets Angela Eagle, the Treasury minister in charge of excise.

Author's profits help Peak disabled path access

Wheelchair users and families with pushchairs will find the going easier on a Peak District path, thanks to a guide-book author.Author Mark Reid, left, with Peak District national park ranger Terry Page as the path is constructed by volunteer helpers from the Oldham and Rochdale Groundwork TrustMark Reid donated part of the profits of one of his walking books to a project at Upper Burbage, which is extending an easy-access path enabling people to enjoy the Peak countryside who might otherwise be unable to access it.Mr Reid handed over £250 to national-park ranger Terry Page at the project.

Climber killed in Cuillins accident

A climber has died after he fell from the Cuillins on Skye.He was airlifted by a helicopter from Stornoway Coastguard after his companion called emergency services at about 12.30pm yesterday.
