A gear manufacturer is sponsoring a group planning to cycle from London to Cape Town to help the street children of Africa.

The ambitious 12,000-mile (19,300km) trip will see six people cycle through 30 countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, including trouble hotspots such as Syria, Egypt and Sudan.

German gear firm Vaude is providing tents, panniers and clothing for the team members, who will depart from Trafalgar Square on 7 August.

Cycle Africa was instigated by charity fundraiser Craig Pollard who, with his child psychologist wife Loretta and four other team members, aims to raise £100,000, along with public awareness of the plight of children living their lives on the streets of Africa.

Mr Pollard said: “The challenge will be the toughest physical and mental challenge that any of us have ever considered. Cycling over 12,000 miles across some of the world’s toughest terrain and some tricky countries thrown in along the way will certainly keep us on our toes!

“We are a group of ordinary people with an ambition to raise awareness for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Yes, we are doing something extraordinary and we hope that by raising awareness and money for Africa’s street children we will be able to encourage those around us to do something inspiring. Anything is possible.”

He praised his sponsors for making the venture possible. “Without the support of our sponsors, this trip could not go ahead and we are extremely grateful for the support that Vaude have given us,” he added.

Chris Davidson from Vaude UK said: “I was extremely impressed with Craig when I met with him to find out more about Cycle Africa and the journey they had ahead of them. As a cyclist myself, I know what a challenge this will be for the whole team and I wish them every success.

“It is fantastic for Vaude to be involved with their inspiring journey by providing the team with much needed kit. We look forward to hearing the updates and providing support for the team as they progress.”

The Cycle Africa team, which has been endorsed by and has the support of Michael Palin, Gordon Brown, Mia Farrow, Boris Johnson, Charley Boorman, Lord Boateng and others, is expected to take 12 months to reach Cape Town. Gareth Morris, Scott Carroll, Jodi Hookins and Martyn Roberts will join the Pollards on the trip.
