Rescuers battled torrential rain and winds reaching 80mph to reach an injured walker on a Lake District fell.
Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 1.40pm on Friday as Storm Amy swept the Cumbrian hills.
One team member was injured during the incident.
The walker raised the alarm from the wind shelter at the summit of Great Dodd Fell. He had twisted his ankle and was unable to continue walking.
A team spokesperson said: “It was a real challenge getting to the casualty with team members battling torrential rain and up to 80mph winds which caused [us] being blown over at times.
“When near the summit the team decided to put the stretcher together and put their kit on top and drag this to the wind shelter as it was impossible to carry this any longer. Once the casualty was reached, he was given pain relief and was then evacuated on a stretcher down the fell towards the Land Rovers.
“From there he was taken to the base and reunited with his friends who came to collect him.
“Unfortunately one team member twisted his leg when he was blown over but was able to make his own way down the fell slowly.”
The incident lasted five hours and involved 13 volunteers from Patterdale MRT.

06 October 2025Never mind their expertise and the time and effort they put, it's the patience of the MRT volunteers that never fails to amaze me when dealing with fools such as the walker (I read elsewhere it was a fell-runner) going out on the fell when the forecasts had been screaming 'don't venture out, stay in, the fells will be there for another day'. I trust the silly fool has made a hefty donation to Patterdale MRT.

07 October 2025Having wandered over to 'grough' Facebook I was surprised by the number of posted comments regarding this article.
Some of those emotive comments indicate a lack of knowledge about Mountaineering and how it gave birth to Mountain Rescue.
Though I suppose, on social media, you don't require knowledge to feel the need to comment.

15 October 2025I saw posts from Patterdale MRT about this incident and they seemed a bit defensive. Did they get criticism for their actions in rescuing this homer/fell runner? Seems to me they did an incredible job in very trying circumstances.
