A mountain rescue team will join a group of air cadets in lighting a beacon on south Wales’s highest mountain.

The beacons will be lit on Pen y Fan on Monday to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee.

Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team will be working with 215 Squadron Air Training Corps from Swansea on the 886m (2,907ft) peak in the Brecon Beacons national park.

The mountain rescue team, who are all volunteers, will be carrying a gas-powered torch beacon and 70 members of the Air Training Corps will carry a more traditional wood-fired beacon to the summit.

Penny Brockman, team leader of Central Beacons Mountain Rescue team said it was an excellent way to foster joint working. She said: “We were thrilled to learn that we would be working with the Air Training Corps to get the beacons to the highest point in southern Britain.

“The team is very proud to be able to join in the celebrations of 60 years of Her Majesty’s reign with our contribution in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons event.

“We look forward to any walkers who wish to join us and the Air Training Corps for the lighting of the beacon on top of Pen y Fan shortly after 10pm.”

Western Beacons Mountain Search and Rescue Team will also be lighting a jubilee beacon on nearby Fan Gyhirych.
