A mountain biker was airlifted from a Lake District mountain after suffering from hypothermia.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out about 2.55pm today to the incident on Dollywagon Pike.

The team was training on the fells at the time with the crew of a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland.

Low cloud initially prevented the aircraft reaching the site, but it was able to airlift some of the team to Grisedale Tarn while the rest of the team walked up to the mountain.

A Patterdale MRT spokesperson said: “However a window of clear weather enabled the helicopter to reach the casualty site where team members assessed the casualty’s condition.

“The casualty was then flown to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for further treatment. The remainder of the casualty’s party were walked off the fell with the team.”

The three-hour rescue involved 16 Patterdale volunteers and two members of the Cockermouth team who were training with them at the time, along with two RAF Mountain Rescue Team members who were also training in the area.
