Dow Crag, scene of the rescue

A fellrunner was airlifted from a fell after becoming hypothermic during a race.

The 70-year-old became unwell on the summit of Dow Crag above Coniston yesterday, Saturday.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at 3.50pm and 16 members of the team were joined by 14 colleagues from the Duddon and Furness team in the operation to help the man.

A Coniston team spokesperson said: “Due to the nature and location, a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer was requested but was unable to get to the casualty site because of low cloud.”

The runner was treated at the scene and stretchered off the summit of the fell.

He was carried to below the cloud base from where the helicopter airlifted him to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
