Colliery land-grab bid 'adds insult to injury'

A land-grab plan by a colliery on a south Wales common where a wind farm is proposed is ‘adding insult to injury’, according to opponents.The application, at Mynydd y Betws (Betws Mountain), near Ammanford, would see the Cwm Yr Onen colliery encroach on to common land.

Police probe double death tragedy on Dorset cliff

A climber has died after falling from sea cliffs in Dorset.Ivan Lissin, 22, of Oxford, died in Southampton General Hospital on Monday from severe head injuries sustained in a fall near Anvil Point, Swanage, the previous day.Dorset Police picture of the Anvil Point site An inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday.

Britain’s climbers are being urged to do their bit for conservation by keeping an eye on climbing restrictions.Each year, voluntary curbs on climbing are put in place to enable birds to nest in peace on many climbing crags.

Quarry fall man has no memory of accident

A man who was found in a critical state after a fall in a Lancashire quarry is improving in hospital – and can’t remember how he ended up at the bottom of a 25m (82ft) drop.Christopher Walsh, 43, was rescued by Bolton Mountain Rescue Team and airlifted by air ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital after his cries for help were heard by passers-by.He had head, chest and pelvic injuries and also suffered damage to his left arm and leg.

Torridon climbing victim's identity confirmed

Police have confirmed that the body found in Torridon is that of former mountain rescue team member Peter Grant.Mr Grant, of Balmacara near Kyle of Lochalsh, went climbing last Wednesday but was reported missing the following day.

Chiltern path signs go missing in theft

A stock of 76 signs which was to have marked a long-distance trail has been stolen before the notices were even installed.The waymarkers would have been put up on the 172-mile Chiltern Way circular walk, but went missing when a trailer was stolen.

Call for action on access-land sign attacks

Attacks on right-to-roam signs in Wales are damaging tourism and deterring walkers from areas opened up under access law.Damage estimated at £5,000 has been caused to signs in Carmarthenshire, which were placed to inform the public where they could use open access land.

Scots ski-range operators in court after crash

A Scottish ski-range employee denied charges of endangering people’s lives yesterday.Kevin Byrne, an employee of the Nevis Range Development Company,  pleaded not guilty to the charge, and to causing severe injury and permanent disfigurement and to contravening the Health and Safety Act.

TV tribute to Hillary this Wednesday

Eyewitnesses tell of the struggle to reach the world’s highest peak in a tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary to be screened tomorrow, Wednesday.The one-hour-long documentary will be shown on BBC2 and includes previously unseen footage of the expedition, along with testimony detailing the controversy involving the successful British expedition and a rival Swiss team.A Tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary: The Race for Everest tells the tale of Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s ascent of the Himalayan peak, including interviews with surviving members of both the successful team and their Swiss competitors.

Mountain group says 'no' to Snowdon signs

British Mountaineering Council (BMC) members in Wales have given the thumbs-down to the idea of placing warning signs on Crib Goch.The proposal was discussed at the last BMC Cymru meeting and unanimously rejected.

Mountain instructors help put birds in the picture

Two instructors from the National Mountain Centre in Plas y Brenin have been helping prepare for a live show of nesting birds.Tim Neill and Adam Harmer abseiled down the remote cliffs at Mousetrap Zawn on Anglesey to survey the nesting location.

Mountain culture award for Hamish MacInnes

A mountain-rescue pioneer will be the first recipient of a new award, to be presented at the end of the upcoming Fort William Mountain Festival.Hamish MacInnes, the man who turned his mountaineering expertise to the invention of a new stretcher, the introduction of search and rescue dogs into his native Scotland and the production of a handbook on mountain rescue, will receive the inaugural Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.Dr MacInnes will be presented with the award at a ceremony on 23 February in the Lochaber town, which will include a DVD presentation detailing his achievements and containing testimonials from friends and fellow climbers.

Rescuers searching for a missing Milton Keynes man have found a body near Pen-y-pass in SnowdoniaDavinder Kundi, 36, was reported missing on Wednesday.

Everest mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington will discuss the closure of the National Mountaineering Exhibition on BBC radio this Friday.The former British Mountaineering Council president will be interviewed on Radio 4’s consumer programme You and Yours, at noon on 22 February.

Lakeland walker rescued after getting lost in dark

A fellwalker had to be led to safety by rescuers after getting lost in the dark.The 53-year-old man from the Manchester area was found by members of the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) after a search of the High Crag area overlooking Buttermere.Black Sail Youth Hostel, with the High Crag range behind The walker, who was alone, rang 999 from a mobile phone after becoming disoriented.
