The Met Office has added a seventh area to its mountain weather forecasts.

Visitors to the fells in the Yorkshire Dales can now see forecasts for two days, along with an outlook for the following days. The service already covers the west and east Highlands, Snowdonia, the Peak District, the Lake District and the Brecon Beacons.

There are synoptic charts for the areas, along with three-hourly forecasts for precipitation through the day. Wind forecasts and satellite imagery of cloud formation are also available, with a forecast temperature for valley and hills at 700m (2,297ft).

Forecasts will be updated twice a day.

Welcoming the Dales’ addition to the mountain forecasts, Mark Allum, access projects officer with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority said: “The Yorkshire Dales are a fantastic area for outdoor activities; and whether you are a hill walker, caver or mountain biker an accurate forecast is a critical piece of information.

“The weather in the Dales is often very different to what is happening in Leeds or York, so this specific mountain weather forecast is very welcome.”

Pat Boyle, public weather service manager at the Met Office, said: “The weather in the Dales can change with little or no warning and an unprepared walker can quickly find themselves at risk. Whether it’s a well-planned expedition or a spur of the moment decision to go to the hills, it is important to check the forecast first”.

Weather forecasts can be found in the links section of grough online magazine.
