The Mini Jompy

The Mini Jompy

A company marketing a new heating system claims it will take water to near-boiling temperatures in a minute and use 60 per cent less fuel than using a pan.

The Jompy is the brainchild of Scottish inventor David Osborne and is a coil of microbore aluminium pipe that sits over whatever stove you would use normally.

The device will be produced in three sizes, with the Jompy Mini aimed at lightweight campers and a performance that claims to heat 300ml of water to 85C in 90 seconds.

The Jompy and Jompy Midi are larger and are aimed at base camp and valley camp users.

The Jompy has an input pipe and an outlet pipe and needs a water holder with a hose, which is attached to the inlet.

The Jompy sits on the stove or, in the two larger models, on an open fire and the outlet produces water at 85C which can be collected in another container.

The distributors say one useful feature is that a pan can sit on top of the Jompy so water can be heated at the same time as something else is cooking.

A spokesperson said: “The large Jompy can produce 1 litre of hot water every 45 seconds. Weighing just 605g and measuring 29cm across, this size is ideal for groups or families.

“The Midi Jompy works well at base camp and yet is light enough at 450g to be taken on group overnight trips.

“The Mini version is smaller than a table tennis bat, and weighs just 60g. It can produce 330ml of hot water every 90 seconds, making it ideal for quick-stop dehydrated meals. Highly portable, it’s perfect for daytrips and excursions.”

The makers claim the device cleans contaminated water and have pledged that, for every unit they sell online, an African family will receive a free Jompy, to help cut down the incidence of illness and death through diarrhoea.

The Mini Jompy will cost £49.90; the Midi will be priced at £54.90 and weighs 450g; the full-size model is £59.90 and tips the scales at 605g.

The distributors expect the Jompy to go on sale in mid-March.
