The book and maps will be auctioned as one lot

An original manuscript notebook produced by Lakeland fellwalking author Alfred Wainwright goes under the hammer later this month.

The book, along with 20 annotated Ordnance Survey maps used by the author, will be auctioned in the writer’s adopted county.

The blue bound ledger contains pages of the pencil script and detailed plan drawings meticulously reproduced in print.

The book and maps, along with a further 25 maps from his assistant Cyril Moore, will be offered for sale at an auction in Carlisle on 25 June.

H&H Auction Rooms, which is handling the sale, has put a pre-sale estimate of between £2,000 and £3,000 on the manuscript and maps, which are being sold as one lot.

Auctioneer and valuer Georgina Nixon: “Wainwright’s notebook will be of great interest to both enthusiasts and scholars alike.

“It provides real insight into the process of working and indeed to the unique style of the author.

“Although a number of more up-to-date guidebooks are on the market, Wainwright’s works remain ever popular for their depth and detail, something still cherished by followers to this day. The unique value of the collection comes in its having been kept together.”

A photograph of two of the pages of the manuscript show a description of the routes up Little Hart Crag in Scandale, which was described in Wainwright’s first Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells – The Eastern Fells.

More details of the auction are on the H&H Auction Rooms website.
