Haystacks, Wainwright's favourite fell

Organisers of the Cumberland Ale Keswick Mountain Festival want photographers to create an image which represents the Alfred Wainwright ideal of his beloved Lakeland. Everest mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington will judge the entries, with the winner winning two tickets to a VIP reception.

The top photographer will also receive two tickets to a talk by Julia Bradbury, whose Wainwright’s Walks series is being re-run at the moment on BBC2. The winner will have his or her photograph framed and will have a night’s accommodation in Keswick provided as part of the prize.

Mountain photographer Tony Riley will join Sir Chris in the judging. He said: “We’re looking for photos with a strong Wainwright theme. So it could be something based on a location or maybe a description used in one of his books.

“This could be combined with aspects of mountain adventure, such as climbing, walking and biking, as well as mountain landscapes. You could for instance find the same viewpoint he used for one of his drawings.”

Or perhaps a depiction of an elderly fellwalker pretending to urinate in the bracken in an effort to avoid socialising with fellow walkers?

Entries can be digital or on negative or transparency film. Originality will be a major part of the judging, with content, quality and technique also taken into consideration. The competition is open to amateurs and professionals.

Closing date for entries is Monday, 5 May. Details are on the festival website
