Mountain rescuers will be among those climbing to the tops of the Ochil Hills to light flares which organisers hope will be seen across the Forth Valley. They will be lit tomorrow night, Wednesday, 17 September.

Volunteers from the Army, rangers and Menstrie Scouts and the Ochils Mountain Rescue Team will also help launch the Clackmannanshire Walking Festival. The festival proper starts the following day and includes an Army Challenge, tackling four summits, including the highest and next highest in the Ochils.

The beacons will be lit at 8.30pm, on 13 separate peaks across the Ochil range, which overlooks the carseland north of the Forth. The highest point on the range is Ben Cleuch, at 721m (2,365ft).

A red flare, fired from Alva, will start the relay.

The first Clackmannanshire Walking Festival includes free walks led by volunteers. It ends on Monday 22 September.

Details are on the Clackmannanshire Tourism website.
