A party of walkers had to be rescued from England’s highest mountain after getting lost.
Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team used an emergency survival shelter to warm the three after they were found in darkness following a four-hour operation. It is the third time in four days that the team has had to go to the aid walkers lost in cloud or darkness.
Richard Warren, chairman of Wasdale MRT, said: “A party of three walkers had become disorientated in cloud on their way up Scafell Pike.
“They turned back but were unable to navigate their way off the mountain in the cloud and darkness. Contact made by mobile phone enabled the team leader to establish their approximate position and they were located at 7pm.”
Seventeen team members were involved in the rescue.

14 January 2009It seems that more and more people are going onto the hill and are unable to use a map and compass. I assume they knew when darkness would fall, and at what point they should have turned back. One wonders what they would have done a few years ago, before mobile phones.
