Walkers in the Cairngorms are being warned that a bridge in a popular glen has been washed away.

The Carnachuin Bridge in Glen Feshie was swept away by flood water earlier this month. The crossing over the River Feshie was used by walkers in the glen, which runs along the western edge of the Cairngorm plateau.

The alert was issued by the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, which said: “The landmark but rickety wooden bridge has been in a state of disrepair for some years now.

“The Glenfeshie Estate had been planning to repair the rare bridge this year and talks are underway with the Cairngorms National Park Authority regarding planning permission. If planning permission is granted, the estate hopes to replace the bridge in May or June 2010.

“The Pony bridge at NN 850 964 is now the last crossing in upper Glen Feshie and the estate has put signs indicating this on the approach route.”

The Carnachuin Bridge formerly stood at 846 937.
