North-West outdoors candidates who pass their assessment can get cash back

Cash is on offer for outdoors workers and volunteers who pass their national qualifications.

The scheme is open to anyone who lives in the North-West Region of England and who successfully undertakes an assessment course in a national governing body award.

Up to £300 is available to successful candidates from the Get Qualified NW Project in certain outdoor, fitness and sports disciplines. The scheme is managed by the University of Cumbria and is being run with cash from the European Social Fund and the regional Learning & Skills Council.

Assessments in qualifications such as Walking Group Leader, Summer Mountain Leader and Single Pitch Award would be eligible for the full £300; candidates who pass their Basic Expedition Leader and Climbing Wall Awards could get £200.

Courses must be through approved providers and fees must be paid in advance and reclaimed.

Applicants must be 19 or over; there is no upper age limit.

Local Cave and Mine Leader assessments, Mountain Bike Leader and Trail Bike Leader awards, and various watersports and paddling awards also qualify.

Details of the bursaries are on the sport and active leisure section of the National Skills Academy website.
