Winter weather at the monitoring station on Aonach Mòr in Lochaber

The independent meteorology service aimed at hillwalkers and climbers has gone into winter mode, with earlier forecasts for the following day.

The Mountain Weather Information Service, which issues forecasts for eight upland areas of Britain, will produce its revised weather reports at 1.30pm each day.

In the summer months, the forecasts are issued at 4.30pm. Explaining the change, Andy Ross of MWIS said: “We do this to facilitate forward planning by hill-goers. Regular users of MWIS will be aware that we do this every winter.”

The service, which covers the north-west Highlands, western Highlands, the Cairngorms and Monadhliath, south-eastern Highlands, southern uplands, Snowdonia, the Lake District, and Yorkshire Dales and Peak District, can be accessed on grough by clicking on our links at the top of the page.
