A group of walkers had to be rescued from a Lake District fell after getting lost in the dark.

Coniston Mountain Rescue Team was alerted at about 6.40pm yesterday, Saturday, after the walkers became benighted on the fells above Coniston.

The group was found, unhurt, on Birk Fell, a 520m (ft) peak leading to Wetherlam. 14 members of the rescue team were involved in the rescue.

The walkers were escorted to safety by rescuers.
