Police have named the paddler who died in Ullswater yesterday.

Samuel John Yarwood, of Poole, Dorset, died after the twin kayak he was in with a friend capsized on the lake after setting out from Sandwick Bay.

The 22-year-old was pulled from the water between Glenridding and Watermillock and flown to hospital in Carlisle, but was pronounced dead there.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Police officers are treating his death as a tragic accident after he and a friend fell into the water whilst canoeing.

“Samuel’s friend, a 20 year old man from Dorset, managed to get out of the water to call for help. He was taken to Penrith hospital for a check up but has since been discharged.
“Mr Yarwood’s family have been informed, along with the coroner. An inquest will open in due course.”
