The 950m (3,117ft) summit of Helvellyn

A boy was airlifted from England’s third highest mountain after he was injured by a falling rock.

The seven-year-old was walking up Helvellyn when the rock hit him on the foot.

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 2.45pm today, Sunday, and 16 members went to the young fellwalker’s aid, along with the Blackpool-based air ambulance.

A spokesperson for the team said: “Due to the steep and exposed location the air ambulance was unable to land close to the scene.

“It was requested to land on the summit of Helvellyn and mountain rescue team members evacuated the boy up to the summit for onward journey by air ambulance to Furness General Hospital [in Barrow] for treatment.”
