The Petzl Tikka RXP

The Petzl Tikka RXP

The introduction by French brand Petzl last year of its NAO model turned a few heads, with an innovative reactive lighting technology that automatically adjusted the light output of the headtorch according to need.

Petzl is now extending the reactive lighting system to two more models: the Tikka RXP and Tikka R+.

The company had its RXP on show at the Kendal Outdoor Retail Show. The torch is the more powerful of the two new models, offering a maximum 180 lumens from two high-power LEDs with wide, mixed or focused beams.

An innovation for both the Tikka models is that they can both be used with a set guaranteed minimum burn time so you can be confident in how long the lighting will last.

The two headtorches automatically adjust the lighting level to optimise the burn time, which is factory-set but which can be customised using the Petzl OS software.

The Tikka R+ has a single high-power LED which gives a mixed beam.

Three reactive lighting levels can be set: max power; standard; and max autonomy to prioritise battery life.

Standard static lighting can also be selected.

Both models have a single integrated unit which contains a lithium-ion battery which can be recharged either at the mains or via a USB lead.

There are two separate switches, with the side one controlling modes and top switch output and functions. Pressing both locks the unit.

Both R-series headtorches are rated IP X4 for waterproofness and also have red LEDs to help preserve night vision.

They also feature a new, two-part headband for extra comfort, support and easy adjustment and both tip the scales at 115g.

Out in the field, the lithium-ion battery can be replaced by standard AAA batteries, but this will give only non-regulated lighting.

The Tikka RXP will sell at £90 and the Tikka R+ at £70 and should be appearing in the shops next month.
