A man has died after collapsing while out walking in the Lake District.

The incident happened on Crag Hill on Wednesday.

The 56-year-old was with two friends near the summit of the fell when he sat down tired, then became unconscious.

His friends called 999 and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team was alerted about 1.40pm. A team spokesperson said: “Keswick team approached via Force Crag mines and Coledale Hause. Cockermouth MRT were also called to assist with the rescue as well as R199 Coastguard helicopter from Prestwick.

“The weather and visibility did not allow the helicopter to approach so it was forced to return.

“Team members arrived on scene but tragically there was nothing that could be done to save the man. Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the man’s family and friends.”

The incident lasted almost 5¼ hours and involved 31 volunteer rescuers, 19 from the Keswick team and 12 from Cockermouth MRT.
