2,400 evacuated as weather hits Ten Tors
Young participants in the annual Ten Tors event had a torrid time at the weekend, culminating in a mass evacuation after torrential rain made conditions dangerous.Two Sea King helicopters were used as 2,400 evacuated the 400 teams of six young people from rain-swept Dartmoor.The Army and 700 volunteers worked throughout Sunday to ensure all the competitors were taken to safety.

Lakes fellwalker dies after collapse
A walker died in the Lake District at the weekend, after collapsing on a fell near Coniston.The unnamed man, from Grasmere, was pronounced dead by a doctor from the North West Air Ambulance service which was called to Holme Fell, where the man had fallen to the ground complaining of chest pains.11 members of the Coniston Mountain Rescue Team also attended the scene early on Saturday afternoon.
Safety fears lead to Brecon waterfall closure
A Brecon Beacons attraction has been closed to the public because of safety concerns.Scwd yr Eira waterfall in the upper Neath Valley has been fenced off because of unstable rocks above it.
Injured students airlifted from Snowdon
Two students were rescued from Snowdon yesterday after a fall near Crib Goch.A Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley on Anglesey winched the two 19-year olds to safety and they were taken to Ysbyty Gwynned, Bangor, with back and leg injuries.Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) joined three members from RAF Valley’s MRT who also took part in the rescue.

Cuillin record for Tressider
An Edinburgh runner is claiming a new record for the traverse of the Cuillin range on Skye.Es Tressider has broken the record held by Cumbrian Andy Hyslop since 1994, completing the 12km route, including the Inaccessible Pinnacle on Sgurr Dearg, in 3h 17mins 28 secs, 14 minutes faster than Hyslop’s time.The traverse, from Gars-bheinn to Sgurr nan Gillean summits, was achieved after Es bivvied on the ridge on the night of 3 May, so he could get an early start.
Weekday closure for Bamford Edge
Climbing is suspended on Bamford Edge in the Peak District this week and on weekdays until 15 June.Access to the edge has been closed by the landowner, as allowed under the Countryside and Rights of Way (CRoW) Act.
Sherpa's record Everest conquest
A Nepalese man has climbed Everest for a record 17th time.Appa Sherpa summited the world’s highest peak with seven other Sherpas and one other climber, 18 years after his first ascent.The 46-year-old was with his climbing partner Lakpa Gyelu, making his own 13th summit during the successful ascent, which took place last Wednesday.

Welsh ospreys produce chick
Birdwatchers in Wales are celebrating the birth of a rare chick.The only breeding pair of ospreys in the principality hatched a chick late last night, with the event being captured on a 24-hour camera.While the Welsh ospreys can’t match the three-in-a-nest shenanigans of their Scottish cousins at Loch Garten, they have successfully produced one offspring from their clutch of three eggs.
Helicopter rescue for injured Snowdonia walker
An RAF helicopter flew an injured walker from a Snowdonia ridge yesterday evening.The unnamed man, from Surrey, fell while walking on the Nantlle Ridge in the West of the national park.The 58-year-old walker suffered a head injury and broken hand in the accident.
