A man was stranded at the bottom of a 110m Yorkshire Dales cave after another party mistakenly removed his ropes.The caver, from Skipton, North Yorkshire, was reported overdue after a trip down the Gaping Gill system on the slopes of Ingleborough.

Photographer will give Wainwright lecture
This year’s Wainwright Memorial Lecture will be delivered by photographer Derry Brabbs.Brabbs’s pictures illustrated several of Alfred Wainwright’s works later on in the author’s career, including Wainwright on the Pennine Way, Fellwalking with Wainwright and Wainwright in Scotland.Derry Brabbs The lecture, the sixth such, will take place at Rheged, near Penrith, on Saturday, 11 October.Previous speakers have included Cameron McNeish and Radio 2 presenter Stuart Maconie.

The Nepalese government has confirmed that the airstrip at Lukla will be renamed Tenzing Hillary Airport.Lukla airport, pictured by grough reader Denzil BroadhurstThe authorities also said they were looking for a suitable mountain peak to be named after the first Everest conquerors, and that the trekkers' trail to base camp would be called the Tenzing Hillary Trekking Route.Sir Edmund Hillary, who died last month, was instrumental in the setting up of the airstrip, the hairy approach to which is most trekkers’ and would-be summiteers’ introduction to the high-adrenaline world of the Himalayas.
