Cyclists are big winners in a competition that saw a £50m lottery grant awarded to a Sustrans scheme.£50m of lottery cash will be spent to encourage cycling and walking The People’s £50 Million Giveaway, decided by votes from members of the public, will also mean improvements to schemes for walking routes.

Police and national park rangers in the Yorkshire Dales mounted an operation to tackle problems caused by motorbikes at the weekend.Bikers riding legally on Cam High RoadIllegal use of motorbikes and off-road vehicles on green lanes in the area is a continuing problem, causing damage to the landscape and disruption to other outdoor users.

Hand-carved bridge graces Kinder route

A hand-carved wooden bridge has been installed on a popular route to the Peak District’s highest fell.Timber from a tree only 200m from the site was used to make the structure, which crosses Golden Clough, in the Grindsbrook valley, en route for the Kinder Scout plateau.

Slackliners' contest will be climax of Fort William festival

Slacklining, mountain morality, the history of mountain rescue and the chance to win a grand: it’s festival time soon in Fort William, with nine days of mountain culture in the self-proclaimed outdoor capital of the UK.Winter walks on Ben Nevis will form part of the festivalPublicity for next year’s event, from 15 to 23 February, kicked off this week with a demonstration of the daredevil art of slacklining – walking across precarious abysses on webbing strapping – as Jon Ritson, an accomplished exponent of the activity, performed various stunts and tricks above the Lower Falls in Glen Nevis.The first ever UK Slacklining Masters’ competition will be staged on the last day of the festival.

Lake District police have asked for walkers’ help in the search for a keen fellwalker who has not been seen for more than a week.Missing fellwalker Christopher DalgleishOfficers in Cumbria say they are deeply concerned for the safety of the 66-year-old man who, they fear, may have got into difficulties on the region’s fells.

Elk join boars on controversial Alladale estate

Two elk have been flown in to bolster the population of wild animals on Paul Lister’s Alladale estate in Sutherland.The young animals were airlifted in from Sweden to Inverness, from where they were transported by road.

One of the most respected outdoor retailers in Canada has withdrawn from sale drinks bottles, widely available in Britain, containing a controversial chemical.Mountain Equipment Co-op, which has no connection with the British Mountain Equipment clothing company, has taken off its shelves all containers made from polycarbonate.

Two campaigning groups have forced an authority to abandon plans to close a right-of-way.Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council wanted to shut the town’s historic Stringer Street Steps, but was ordered this week by a judge to come up with a plan to keep the route open.

Skye warning signs will be toned down

Over-the-top warning signs on Skye are to be replaced, after complaints they were putting off walkers.A report to Highland Council says that people passing along the path leading to the Old Man of Storr were confronted with a notice saying: You are strongly advised not to enter.The path to the Old Man of Storr Photo: Jörn Albring The access officer says a number of complaints have been received from the public that the sign, erected by a Scottish Executive department, would deter people walking to the area.
