A climber has died in hospital after falling from a route on Cairn Gorm.

Police said John Wooding was on Aladdin’s Mirror in Coire an t-Sneachda on Sunday when he fell about 2pm.

Mr Wooding, 29, known as Jack, of Limehouse, east London, died on Monday from injuries he suffered in the incident.

A Northern Constabulary spokesperson said members of Cairngorm, Glenmore Lodge and Tayside Mountain Rescue Teams went to Mr Wooding’s aid and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth flew to the corrie, on the northern face of the 1,245m (4,085ft) mountain.

The police spokesperson said: “He was taken by air to Raigmore Hospital [in Inverness] and was thereafter transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary due to the nature and extent of his injuries.

“Despite the best efforts of all involved the man sadly died yesterday afternoon at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

Mr Wooding’s next of kin have been informed and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Aladdin’s Mirror is a 180m Grade I route described by Allen and Blair Fyffe in their Winter Climbs in the Cairngorms as an exposed snow route skirting steeper rocks which joins the Aladdin’s Couloir route higher up.
