Police have named the man who died after falling more than 300ft from Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis.

Ben St Joseph, 22, of Essex, fell into Tower Gully on the North Face of the 1,344 m (4,409ft) mountain, the highest in the UK.

Mr St Joseph’s fall was witnessed by other climbers in the area, who alerted the emergency services.

Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team went to the climber’s aid, and a Royal Navy search and rescue Sea King helicopter from HMS Gannet in Ayrshire went to the scene and airlifted the injured man to Belford Hospital in Fort William, but he died from his injuries.

Northern Constabulary said a report is being submitted to the procurator fiscal.
